Banda Aceh (ANTARA Aceh) - A Hong Kong-based energy firm, China Huadian Hong Kong Co. Ltd. (CHDHK) has planned to invest in renewable energy sector in Aceh.

"Aceh local government has signed a document of cooperation with CHDHK," a spokesman of Aceh government, Mulyadi Nurdin, said here on Thursday.

The memorandum of understanding (MoU) on the cooperation was signed in Jakarta recently, witnessed by Aceh Governor Irwandi Yusuf, and it would focus on development of hydro power plant.

The energy firm has also invested in the development of Asahan 1 hydro power plant project, Lafarge coal-generated power plant in Lhoknga, and steam-generated power plant in Batam and Bali.

CHDHK is an entirely-owned subsidiary of China Huadian Corporation. The company supports its main goal of investing in power generation, coal resources development, and power grid construction with financial and trading capabilities.

Currently, the company has five wholly owned subsidiaries, six holding companies, and two joint ventures spread across several countries and regions, chiefly in Russia, Cambodia, Indonesia, and Singapore, among others.

"They have the expertise in development funding, operation of coal-generated power plant, hydro power plant, wind, and solar energy, and they are keen to expand their business in Indonesia," Mulyadi stated.

Under the MoU, the company would develop 2 thousand megawatts of electricity in Aceh, with a total investment of some US$5 billion.

"The investment could be increased if there are higher demands in Aceh," he revealed.
